It breaks my heart… really! Amidst the emails I get for help on starting their own paranormal research group or how to get started ghost hunting, I also get to hear about people’s struggles. I hear about groups with power trips, redneck hillbillly groups calling whatever floats in the air a spirit, and may favorite… orb photos. You would think that with so many groups out there that someone would bother to help teach people proper practices and procedures. You would think… It is time for a change in the paranormal community.

Okay, now you’ve offended me. What’s wrong with “redneck hillbilly groups”? Seems to me that if the darn ghost smells like chicken, it must be black.
Recently there was a local group a few towns away who went on television and said that all those orbs in his pictures and video were ’spirit orbs’
I got so mad I nearly threw my remote through my new TV!
In a field of investigation not generally sanctioned by mainstream science, you will have the entire gamut of investigative styles (from purely scientific to totally mystical or even loony) and interpretations of captured phenomena. Even the scientific has its occasionally cold fusion brouhahas.
There are some academics looking into research in the paranormal field, and protocol and data collection methods are being developed. The more interest in the field, the more people and therefore, a wider variety of skills. Interestingly, some even work with sensitives- they are trying to develop data collection methods around this, as well!
@WizardWayne - You are absolutely right. We are on the fringe until some new advances in technology or methods are discovered and accepted.
What made me mad was the guy was on TV and sounded like the biggest backward hick… he could have easily been standing in the middle of a trailer park picking lint from his belly button and drinking a beer as he described the ’science behind it.’
Something should be done. Some ghost hunting groups gives others a bad name. Do you know how many photos I get that people tell me they have a spirit? All i see are orbs or something so cropped and zoomed and lightened so much all I see is pixelation and to them its paranormal.
I’m all for unity. It would be great if there was a group created that all ghost hunters could become a member of. We all agree on rules, how hunts should be done, or what have you.Like minded individuals.
What I believe is that we need an organized body to oversee and direct people. Membership is less about belonging to a group and more about empowering the individual to be better informed and educated. It is my hope that we will surround each other with support and advice no matter if you are starting out or have an established group.
From presented evidence I see on ghost-hunting websites, television and radio programs, blogs, etc. I always have to ask myself “What is the objective of the person presenting the evidence?” It seems that those who want glory or notoriety (”I got the best evidence ever!”) are the ones most likely to use unscientific procedures and to accept weak evidence.
